Latex paint

Please make sure all paint for pickup is sealed, in its original container, and next to your Ridwell bin.

We offer latex paint pickup as an add-on to any regularly scheduled pickup.

Why use Ridwell?

When you give your latex paint to Ridwell, it is used to create new paint! Reformatted latex paint is often sold to groups that support low-income homeowners and organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Plus, the metal and plastic paint cans can be recycled!

How it works

1

Add latex paint onto your pickup

When you opt-in to your pickup, add latex paint. You can find it under the add-ons section.

2

Let us know what you have for us

Select the type and number of cans you have for pickup.

3

Prep your paint for pickup

Please make sure all paint is in its original cans and sealed. Leave the paint next to your Ridwell bin or let us know if it will be somewhere else.

4

We pick up your paint!

We’ll safely transport your paint cans to our partners so that they can be responsibly recycled.

What items can we take?

We can take all latex and water-based paint in its original container. Please don’t mix paint, otherwise it will have to be thrown out.

In the past, the recommended way to dispose of latex paint was to dry it out (often chemically) and then send cans to the landfill. This left us wanting more as it took time, landfill space, and often came with an added charge from our local trash company.

A better way now exists! Latex paint can now be recycled. Cans you no longer need can be combined with other paint before it gets turned into a new type. Better still, any metal or plastic in the cans is recycled as well!

Partnering with GreenSheen

We’re partnering with GreenSheen to recycle your latex paint. GreenSheen combines the latex paint they collect, re-tints it, and then distributes it to nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity. Even better, they recycle the cans that paint comes in to reduce waste further!

FAQ

How much does latex paint pickup cost?

We are offering latex paint pickups as part of our suite of add-on categories.

Latex paint pickup is priced according to the container size:

  • Pint/quart - $2
  • Gallon - $5
  • 5-gallon - $10

Can you take dried out paint?

Unfortunately, if it's dry, our partner can't recycle it. Dried-out paint can be thrown away in your municipal trash can.

How can I tell if it’s latex paint?

Check the label for “100% latex or acrylic” and/or “cleans up with water”. If you can’t determine that it is latex, send a picture with a label and cleaning instructions to help@ridwell.com for advice.

What if I've mixed paint together?

GreenSheen Paint can't accept latex paint mixed together, or mixed with other things such as oil or urethane.

Are rusted lids okay?

Yes, they just need to be able to be fully sealed, in the original container. Please make sure the paint type label is clearly visible so we can double check it is latex paint.

Do you have pricing for cans that aren’t full?

Due to our logistics and recycling costs, pricing is based on container size regardless of how full it is.

How do you determine pricing?

Latex paint is big and bulky, so pricing is determined by the costs of pickup, logistics, and recycling. Feel free to email us if you have any questions!

Can you take paint mixed with kitty litter?

This is a reuse and recycling program, so paint that is mixed with kitty litter can't be processed by our partner.

If you have mixed your paint with kitty litter, allow it to dry and put it in your municipal garbage can.

Is there a free drop off option?

With Washington State's new paint care program, individuals can drop off their latex paint for recycling for free!
