More little tiny plastic things! Bread tags do help keep our loaves fresh, but they also contaminate beaches and waste streams as they slip through the cracks.
Save up your bread tags - we’ll be featuring this on a regular basis!
Marble Plastics, based in Columbus, OH, is helping to keep hard-to-recycle plastics out of landfills. They accept many types of post-consumer and post-industrial plastics like cutlery, solo cups, bottle caps, and bread tags to create their masterpieces. Marble plastics create sheets of recycled plastic that can be cut, designed, and crafted into a variety of new products for the building materials and furniture-making industries. Bread Tags provided by Ridwell Members are sent to Marble Plastics on behalf of Danielle Cares for Chairs and are included in their recycling process to add beautiful pops of color throughout. Other hard-to-recycle plastics Ridwell members provide are sent to Marble Plastics for research and development projects.
Danielle Cares for Chairs, started by a 17 year old high school in 2017, is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to collecting bread tags and providing them to Marble Plastics, where the funds are used to purchase wheelchairs and other medical mobility devices for those in need. Danielle Cares for chairs promotes initiatives to serve the people who need it most. This is done by taking action with urgency in order to raise public awareness about the most pressing issues of today’s society. Since 2017 they have collected over 8 million bread tags and provided 14 mobility devices.
What happens after the program is over?
We work with a partner in Oregon to recycle bread tags once the program at The Little School is complete!
