Approximately 75% of us use some form of vision correction. Many people wear glasses, either regularly or occasionally for things like reading. If you include sunglasses, the number may even reach 100%. Despite all of those glasses-wearers among us, few people know what can happen to an old pair once you are through with them.
We’ve learned that all kinds of glasses can be donated to a local partner who will distribute them to people in need throughout the world. And even better, this great partner will also take over-ear hearing aids!
The Santa Monica Pacific Palisades Lions Club has been active in Santa Monica and the Westside since 1923. Inspired by Helen Keller in 1925, the Lions Club mission is to prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired. Their work in vision includes collecting used eyeglasses, to be cleaned, repaired, sorted and distributed free of charge to those who need them. They now also collect used hearing aids to help those who are hearing impaired that would not be able to afford them.
In addition to local community support for a variety of non-profit organizations, through volunteer efforts and grants, they carry out the global missions of Lions Club International (LCI) which include diabetes awareness and education, combating hunger with access to nutritional foods, supporting families impacted by childhood cancer, and working to protect and restore our environment.
